Photo: Mike Peel / CC BY-SA 4.0The women’s rights campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen has said she has been charged over posts on the social media site X, following a Metropolitan Police investigation.
She is accused of an offence under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 of sending, between 23 and 25 June, a message by means of a public electronic communications network that was “grossly offensive”, according to the charge Ms Keen read out in a video on 30 October, Reclaim The Net reported. The Free Speech Union, which is supporting her defence, has also announced the charge.
She is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday 4 December.
Ms Keen attended a voluntary police interview in September. A charge is an allegation, and she has not yet entered a plea.
Section 127 makes it an offence to send a message over a public communications network that is grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing. It carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison.
Ms Keen, also known as Posie Parker, founded the campaign group Standing for Women and has organised “Let Women Speak” events in the UK and abroad.
Lord, we pray for Kellie-Jay Keen and her family as she faces this charge, and for the magistrates, prosecutors and police involved. Grant justice and fairness, and protect honest speech in our country. Amen.
