About The Plumbline
The Plumbline is straight news on life, family, faith and freedom in the UK, with a way to respond to every story.
What we cover
We report on the laws, court cases and public decisions that shape life, marriage and family, religious freedom, free speech and conscience in the UK. We follow bills through Parliament, cases through the courts and policies through councils, schools and the NHS, and we cover other news on these issues wherever it happens.
We publish one story a day. We keep news and comment apart, and most of what we publish is news: what happened, who decided it, and what happens next.
Every story has a response
Under each story you will find ways to act on it: write to your MP, see how your MP voted, follow a bill’s progress, sign a petition, send a message of support, or pray. Our weekly Pray the week guide sets out what is coming up in Parliament and the courts each Sunday evening.
How we work
- Accurate. We link to the bill, the judgment or the official record wherever we can, so you can check for yourself.
- Fair. We describe people we disagree with accurately and quote them in their own words.
- Careful with live cases. When a case is before the courts we report the facts only.
- Open about mistakes. We correct errors promptly and say so.
Why The Plumbline?
A plumb line is a weight on a string. Builders hang it beside a wall to see whether the wall is straight. It does not argue or take sides; it shows what is true.
In the book of Amos, God shows the prophet a plumb line and says he will set it among his people, to measure a nation by what is right rather than by what is popular.
“Behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.” Amos 7:7
That is what we try to do with the news: report straight on life, family, faith and freedom in the UK, show where each law and decision stands, and give you a way to respond.
